Guest Lecture by School of Management and Commerce on “GST–Goods and Services Tax” on 16th November, 2017

The School of Management & Commerce organized a guest lecture by Shri Sunil Chopra Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Retd.), on the topic of “GST – Goods and Services Tax” on 16th November, 2017. At present Shri Sunil Chopra is working as Income Tax Ombudsman of Tamilnadu and Puduchery. Shri Chopra explained the genesis of GST which was first time implemented in France in 1954.He also explained the journey of GST in India. In his speech very lucidly he elaborated and explained the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council and major decisions taken by GSTC so far. He also explained about the salient features of GST and the items lists under various slab, comprehensively. The lecture was full of knowledge in which students learnt about adjustment of ITC between the Centre and the States, Prevention of cascading tax effect, Registration under GST, HSN Code and GST, Reverse charge mechanism under GST, Refunds under GST, Benefits of GST, Ease of doing business and Comparison of GST in India with some other countries. More than 150 students from various disciplines attended the lecture. The lecture ended with question and answer session in which faculty and students asked various questions and cleared their doubt. he event was coordinated by Dr.Meghna Chhabra, Associate Professor, School of Management and Commerce.
