23rd November 2020

The APJ Abdul Kalam Science Club organized a webinar on "Chemistry in Everyday Life" on 23rd November 2020 from 3:10pm onward. The webinar was delivered by Dr. Neeraj Kumari, Assistant Professor, School of Basic and Applied Science, K. R. Mangalam University, Gurugram.

A webinar on “Chemistry in everyday life” was organized by APJ Abdul Kalam Science Club. The webinar was delivered by Dr. Neeraj Kumari, Assistant Professors, School of Basic and Applied Science, K. R. Mangalam University.

The purpose of the webinar was to aware the students about importance of chemistry in our daily life. One-hour interactive session drew the attention of students towards the world of chemistry. Dr. Neeraj described the importance of chemistry from human body to environment.

Dr. Neeraj described about major elements like Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Calcium and Phosphorous which form almost 95% part of human body. These elements form the key types of molecules in the body: carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins. These molecules form all our cells and carry out most of the chemical processes needed for life. There are some minor elements like Iron, Manganese, Zinc present in the human body. These micronutrients have great importance for a healthy living. Micronutrients play a central part in metabolism and in the maintenance of tissue function. She told to the students that different organs of human body function at their optimal level of pH. When pH levels are unbalanced, it is mostly in the case of being too acidic due to which human being face gastric problem.

Dr. Neeraj correlate the chemistry with our kitchen activities. Most of us noticed the changes in colour of flame while working in the kitchen which is due to the absence or presence of oxygen. She also described the mechanism behind this which is mainly due to the excitation of electron from ground state to excited state after absorption of energy in form of light. She further explained that why sometimes we feel teary while chopping onion which is mainly due to Sulphur compound present in onion.

In her lecture, she highlighted the role of chemistry in food where different chemical compounds like Saccharin (o – sulphobenzimide) used as artificial sweetening agent; sodium metabilsuphite, sorbic acid and its salt are used as food preservative; nutritional supplements in from of tablets, capsules are used. Now a days, Chemistry play an important role in environment. It helps to develop methods and procedures to reduce the contaminants or the chemicals in the air, water which improves the quality of air and water.

She concluded that the chemistry is very interesting and play an important role in our life. Everything is made of chemicals. Drugs are chemicals. Food is made from chemicals. Many of the changes we observe in the world around us are caused by chemical reactions. Examples include leaves changing colors, cooking food and getting yourself clean. Knowing some chemistry can help you make day-to-day decisions that affect your life. Chemistry concepts are important in other disciplines. It's key to cooking, biology, physics, and astronomy.
