Rehabilitation Centre

On 13th April, 2018 Students of School of Education visited Amar Jyoti Research and Rehabilitation Centre.

Amar Jyoti Research and Rehabilitation Centre was established in 1981 at Delhi, under the aegis of Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust. Amar Jyoti is a voluntary organization rendering rehabilitative services to persons with disabilities through a holistic approach of inclusive education, medical care, vocational training, child guidance and self-employment.

The School run by the trust provides education to disabled students with normal children in an inclusive setting besides having a well-developed research centre and a teacher training institute for special teachers. This organization has developed medical facilities for treating its students and other children from the community with different kind of disabilities. Thecampus is equipped with state of the art resource rooms, medical rooms, assistive devices and other facilities.Medical facilities include Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Departments, Speech Therapy and Audiology Unit, Prosthetic and Orthotic Workshop which provide and repair assistive devices for Amar Jyoti School children as well as other beneficiaries. The campus also houses Dental Care Unit, Ophthalmologic Care unit, X-Ray Unit, Pathology Laboratory, Operation Theatre, Homeopathy, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity and Dietary Clinic etc.

The School follows CBSE and NIOS curriculum and has included skill development courses such as arts and craft, cutting and tailoring, beauty culture, pottery, artificial jewellery making, computers etc. into their core curriculum. The School has the provision of preparatory classes for inclusion of developmentally delayed children, hearing and visually impaired as well as those with multiple disability.

Our students walked through the campus and had a first-hand experience of EDUCATION in an inclusive setting in terms of teaching strategies, classroom environment, teaching – learning processes, instructional material and physical infrastructure. The students were fortunate enough to listen to Padma BushanDr.Tuli, founder and managing trustee of Amar Jyoti,who has dedicated her life to the cause of inclusive education. Students learnt various teaching strategies to cope up such students in the classroom. It was ahuge learning experience for everyone.

Dr. Anita Sardana Head of the Department of special Education at Amar jyoti also addressed our students and made them aware about different kinds of disabilities and methodology adopted by teachers to teach differently abled students with various types of disabilities in an inclusive setting. She also said “teaching students with disability is a challenging job; those with passion should enter into this profession”. Overall mood of the students after this visit was sombre and reflective, may be this visit had aroused a sense of empathy in our students.
